Biggest winners from English Premier League's latest round of fixtures
It was another super exciting round of EPL fixtures that saw Manchester United barely hanging on to the top spot but they can count themselves lucky as Arsenal missed out on a chance to get level on points with their adversaries, only drawing with a 10 man
Wigan.
Chelsea, however, returned to winning ways in the midweek but they too were far from being convincing as Ancelotti’s men put out another wretched performance in front of the home fans.
After every round of fixtures, there are bound to be winners and losers but here is a list of some of the biggest winners from English Premier League's last (previous) round:
Wolverhampton Wanderers:
Wolves have to be the biggest winners of the last round as they secured their first away win of the season and also their first ever Premier League win over Liverpool.
Wolves have been missing quality in their recent games. A poor first touch, a disappointing final ball in the box, poor finishing, misplaced passes, goal keeping errors, defensive howlers and what not? it’s the small bits and pieces that have been missing
from their armoury.
Yet whatever they lacked in quality, they made it up at Anfield with the quantity of their grit, heart and endeavour. Wolves' goal last night was the culmination of 10 minutes of untiring work in the midfield. They pressed hard, harried and ran, never ceased
working to overcome their shortcomings. Finally, they unlocked just enough to create an opening goal and the three points they thoroughly deserved last night.
Mick McCarthy:
Mick McCarthy’s simple game plan worked to perfection last night. It was a simple 4-4-2 formation that undid the Liverpool defence and never gave them any room in the midfield. Sometimes perhaps simplicity is the best way to go about things and last night,
it was simple from Mick yet highly effective.
Chelsea:
No matter their performance was still wretched last night yet it was enough to see them return to winning ways. Florent Malouda’s goal last night finally lifted the pressure on the team and may have just been enough to stop the rot.
It may still fade away as a false dawn just like their swashbuckling start to the season but for the time being, the win has breathed new life into the team. Had they ended the year with a defeat, the New Year would have started with an obituary of the defending
champions and most probably their manager.
But that did not happen and Ancelotti's men have lived to fight another day. The victory last night over Bolton has reinstalled in them the belief and faith that they can still do it, that they can still catch Manchester United and it would only take a brave
man to bet against that.
Already this season, we have seen some shocking results. The title race looks to be the tightest in ages and one cannot rule out anything.
Manchester City and Tottenham:
They are the two teams threatening to disrupt the established order in the English Premier League. Both were the only two teams in the top five of the table that won both of their matches over the festive period. Credit must be given to them for that.
Wigan:
One was a non penalty at one end while another was a stonewall handball not awarded at the other. But, holding Arsenal to a draw is no mean feat and credit to the Latics for achieving this, in turn favouring Manchester United and helping them go into the
New Year still at the top of the table.
