Question:

Bike Locks?

I just bought a nice bike. I'd like to ride it to do errands and maybe even to work. I live in a fairly low-crime area. What would be the best lock to buy? Should I get a chain or a U lock. Also, how do I use these locks?

  1. Hi!

Get one that is at least 6'. Make sure sure wrap it around the front tire, the frame, and the back tire- so some jerk doesn't steal even part of it. Mine is a coiled lock with a key. I wrap it around under my seat.

  2. i had a $1200 bike in college and never lost it with a kryptonite 'u' lock thru the seat tube and rear tire and a cable from the 'u' lock to the front tire and back to the 'u' lock. and lock all that to an anchored pole. any one can get a bike if they have enough time, but when they see one locked up good, they will move on. good luck - hope it helps!

  3. Bike theft isn't always a crime of opportunity, so I'd get as strong a lock as you think your bike is worth.  Friends of mine have lost bikes that were chained up on some pretty nice streets.  I'm partial to the Kryptonite cable with combination lock, but many riders I know wouldn't use anything weaker than the stouter Kryptonite U-lock.  I imagine there are other good locks but I'm a one-brand buyer in this area.   Talk to a serious bike shop about this; they'll have heard from customers if anything they sold failed to do the job.

  4. My last bike was stolen in what I thought was a low crime area, so when I bought a new one, I went with a u-lock.  There's no way anyone is cutting through that and some even come with guarantees that will pay if your bike is somehow stolen.  Check out some products here: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/part...

Also, consider registering your bike here: http://www.juststolen.net/

It never hurts to be extra safe.  I learned that the hard way.
