  1. If you are talking about the front derailleur you can adjust it so it won't rub.

Don't touch the clamp on the derailleur you want to adj the barrow adjuster on the shifter up at the brake lever.

  2. Its normal if it is in your 3 on the main and like the 1st on the wheel, DO NOT ADJUST CLAMP, this is just asking for problems, you will have to retune everything on the derailleurs, my advice is to just avoid those gears, it is due to the limited room for the gear differences with the wide chain

  3. No need to get new bikes! All bikes get tweaked from time to time. If you mean the front dérailleur, just go to where it clamps onto your bike frame, loosen it with an allen wrench, and slide it up or down until the chain no longer clicks against the dérailleur. It is a very small margin though to get it perfect, so it does not click when your chain is on the biggest gear on the  front, and smallest gear in the back, or vice versa. It works best to do this with your bike lifted off the ground, like on your car, so your wheels turn freely when you turn the pedals. On my bike, i just accept the fact that it will click a little in 1-1 gear, as well as 3-9 gear.

  4. You don't say what type of bikes they are, but most bikes are the same.  If your chain is on the small chain ring at the front you should have no rubbing on the large cogs at the rear.  If you move the chain down to the smaller cogs at the rear the chain may start to rub the front cage.  At that point you should change on to the outer chain ring, the noise should stop.  If you now have the chain on the smallest cog at the rear and change the gears at the rear one at a time, the chain will rub again when it gets close to the largest cog.  This is generally normal.

Therefore, the general rule is:  (1) Small chain ring at front large cogs at rear.  (2) Large chain ring at front small cogs at rear.

If the chain rubs at other times your gears need adjusting.  Try this site.http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustm...

    Hope that helps.
