Hi,

Its my Brothers birthday in a week and he will be 9.

I wanted to get him a bike. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about bikes and if this is big enough for his age as he wants a big bike ???

  1. Bikes are not sized by the riders age but rather by the riders height. You'll need to measure his inseam.

To measure your inseam stand straight and flat footed on the floor (I recommened wearing your shoes since you'll be wearing them when you ride) Use a measuring tape to get the length of your inside leg measurement, or inseam. There should be atleast 1" between the top of the inseam and the top tube of the bike.

In general you may see a 9 year old riding a 22"-24" bike but remember that riding a bike thats too big makes it difficult to control and can lead to accidents.

    Inseam vs Bike Size

    12"-16" = 12" Bike

    16"-20" = 14" Bike

    18"-22" = 16" Bike

    19"-24" = 18" Bike

    21"-26" = 20"  Bike

    24" & Up = BMX or Freestyle (usually 20")

    24"-28" = 24" Bike

    26"-30" = 26" Bike (Ladies)

    29"-33" = 26" Bike (Mens)

And yes, it is recommended that if possible bring him with you to try him on the bike for exact sizing and to get an idea of the type of bike or features of a bike he is interested in.

  2. well that depends. do other kids ride by ur house on bikes? if so it would be a good idea to get him one.

  3. Why not take him to a bike shop and let him pick one out.

It is always wise to try one out for size before buying! Even if you don't buy it right then and there (maybe try the internet!) you'll know exactly what size and type of bike he REALLY wants.

Good luck, great idea for a gift!

  4. thats a good answer skate
