Just buy a set of smooth tread tires, your bike will roll faster on the road, but off road traction will not be as good. The only thing holding you back with road tires will be the lower gearing that all mountain bikes have, changing that would be expensive. If your bike has front and rear suspension, that will also soak up a lot of your energy.
