  1. I live in California so I'll give you nation wide stats and California stats.

•Motorcyclists killed in accidents have increased 140% over the past 10 years

•Motorcyclist deaths are increasing at alarming rates

•The leading cause of death for Americans 15 - 20 years old is motor vehicle collisions.

•Fatal traffic accidents have steadily increased since 1994.

•For every 100,000 licensed drivers in the U.S., 21 of them are killed in an accident per year.

•For every 100,000 people in the U.S., 14 of them are killed in a traffic accident per year

    National Statistics 2000-06

•In 2000 37,526 people were killed in accidents, 2,897 of them were motorcyclists.

•In 2001 37,862 people were killed in accidents, 3,197 of them were motorcyclists.

•In 2002 38,491 people were killed in accidents, 3,270 of them were motorcyclists.

•In 2003  38,477 people were killed in accidents, 3,714 of them were motorcyclists.

•In 2004 38,444 people were killed in accidents, 4,028 of them were motorcyclists.

•In 2005 39,252 people were killed in accidents, 4,576 of them were motorcyclists.

•In 2006 38,588 people were killed in accidents, 4,810 of them were motorcyclists.

The list just goes on and I could be here for hours writing up some of the statistics. Would I recommend a motorbike? No, some of the worst accident related deaths come from motorcyclists. Which are safer? In reality, neither one but your chances of surviving an accident in a car are much greater.

  2. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2006, 4,810 people died in motorcycle crashes, up 5.1 percent from 4,576 in 2005 to the highest level since 1981.

Motorcycle crash fatalities have increased every year for the past nine years.

More than 103,680 auto accidents per day.

Because of these car accidents, many people die and get injured, including, fatal or nonfatal crashes, injury crashes, and property damages.

An average of 117 people dies each day with this freak accident which is equal to 44,705 deaths yearly due to traffic accidents.

Well you can say that a bike is safer but the driver of a car is what you need to worry about if you ride a bike.

  3. Car. I don't have any statistics but I do see signs reminding us drivers to be aware of motorcyclists. I do my best but some of them drive just as recklessly and carelessly as car drivers. There are bad drivers where I live and a lot of accidents. You would think people would learn someday but they don't.  If you drive defensively then it shouldn't matter which you drive.

  4. Cars are safer because of the seat belts and airbags. Motorcycles are risky because cars have seat belts and airbags :) Thats right number one enemy for motorcycle is car drivers making left turns. since they are safe they don't care even if the motorcycle is on their path.

The statistics will show more fatalities percentage in motorcycles because of stupid squids riding in over 100mph. Also you can drink and drive and still be alive in a car, but if you drink and ride you are a statistics for sure.

so there are risks involved in a motorcyle, but if you are a decent moderate speed rider with safety as priority you will enjoy biking more than a car and like you said i learnt how to ride a bike before a car and it was well worth it.
