Question:

Bike skewers?

for some reason my skewer on my back wheel snapped in half today. the bike is a little over a year old. I ride the bike at least 5 miles a day. I am not sure if I need to go farther into detail about this situation but what are your thoughts on what has caused this. Plus to replace it, does it really matter what brand I get?

  1. it was probably a faulty skewer. You can get skewer really for the back wheel, they are longer than the front ones

  2. You prob'ly have it over tightened, it's not much different then breaking the shaft of a bolt.  The QR should be more then snug, but if it takes A LOT of pressure to 'close' the lever, then most likely you are putting it on too tight.

My general rule when I teach people is when the skewer will be closed in a vertical orientation, that it can just barely hold itself halfway (sticking straight out).

Conversely it could have been faulty as well. . .or damaged from the wheel taking a hard hit that bent the axle.

There really should be no difference in brands, other than prices variances for  weight and 'sleekness factor', a generic one will do, most shops should have some.

    Get out and ride.

  3. No brand doesn't matter just be sure to get the right length. The probable reason it broke was over tightening it. It only needs to be firm, not cranked down really hard.
