I bought a motorbike on friday and am due to pick it up tomorrow it has no tax on it at the moment.

I sorted out my insurance this morning but do not have any documentation to tax the bike until it comes in the post.

What will happen to me if i get stopped by the police ( I plan to get it taxed as soon as i can)

Cheers

  1. You will get a fine.

if its it declared SORN, that's bad :

"The maximum penalty for making a false declaration by declaring SORN when the vehicle is actually used or kept on a public road is £5000 and two years imprisonment."

if the tax has just run out, you will have to pay the back tax and a fine :

"You’ll get an automatic penalty of £80, as well as paying for a new tax disc and any arrears of vehicle tax you owe"

    Best Advice:

Hire a van and put it in the back - drive it up a scaffold plank or 2, or get a tail lift luton, easy.

  2. The other option is to purchase your tax online. The police vehicle registration checker will be updated that it is taxed, even if the disk isn't actually on your vehicle. Because your bike is insured (though you don't have the documents) there will be no problem doing it online

Have fun with your new bike!

  3. the others are right, the only other way round it is to get the owner to get the tax for you and give him the money whilst it is in his name, tell him that way it wont be stuck in his garage for another week or more, or even go to the post office with him whilst you are there,

  4. They can bok you for no Road Tax. Why not pick up the bike when you have the Tax and save any worries.

  5. you will get a nice £5000 fine
