Question:

Bikes comparable to Trek FX series?

Looking at buying a Trek FX 7.5. Anybody who has it or a FX series recommend it or something else? I'm currently riding a GT mountain bike with front-suspension that I threw on some road tires. Want something lighter for paved trail and commuting, but not a full road bike. Also, go with carbon fiber fork, tighter tires of the 7.5 or save a few bucks and go with the 7.3?

  1. There are other mfrs that have models that could be classed the same as the FX.  Specialized (Sirrus), Giant, Marin, KHS, Schwinn, Jamis (Coda) and others all have flat bar road bikes of some sort.  If I recall correctly, Masi also makes one that looks good...just forget what's it's called now???  Best bet is to do your research, find out what your local dealers stock, and take them out for a spin.

For your intended purposes, I bet you'll be pleased with the FX.  The 7.5 would be a great choice, unless you want to tighten your budget and go with the 7.3.  For not much more money, you do get a good deal more than a carbon fork when you choose the 7.5.

And check out the Ergon grips, if you haven't already done so.  I put the GC2-L grips on my flat bar and consider it a definite improvement.  If your dealer also sells Ergon products, you could see about getting the grips upgraded @ purchase if you like them enough.

  2. I have a 7.3 and like it a lot. It's a great bike for the money. You might also look at the Raleigh Cadent line.
