  1. biking gets you into better shape then running, and its more fun

  2. Instead of comparing mileage compare time. For example if you jog for 30 minutes riding for 30 will be the same. The key is to put in the same effort. Riding easily will not be the same effort as running. Ride hard enough to equal your running effort. A ballpark estimate: with equal effort you will find about 2.5 miles of hard riding will equal 1 mile of running.

Using a heart rate monitor is the most accurate way to determine effort but certainly not needed for general exercise. Remember even a slow jog takes effort while riding a bike slowly take almost no effort, you must ride hard enough to bring up your heart rate. Both cyclists and runners are some of the most fit athletes in the world. Cycling is a great exercise that doesn't beat up your knees, ankles and feet.

  3. Just a guess, but I'd say you'd have to bike about 5 or 10 miles to get about as tired as jogging one mile....
