i live in manhattan but would like to get away to a quiet, scenic area in pa for the weekend on my bike. can anyone tell me where a good trail is that is near nyc that is:

1) not more than 2 hours away from the city

2) round or circular (though not necessary)

3) safe or novice-friendly - i can bike 20+ miles easily but i can get lost if a trail is confusing

4) gorgeous

thanks in advance and have a great night

  1. Go to Jim Thorpe, PA and go to Blue Mountain Sports right in the middle of town. For $16 they will ferry your bike up to the top of a 20+ mile rails to trails trail that runs along the Lehigh River. It's pretty much level, following the river all the way back into town.

It's great in the spring, summer and fall.

If you'd prefer mountain biking, ask them to point you to the switchback trail out by the lake.

  2. Trexlertown PA, just below Allentown, is the home of the Lehigh Valley Velodrome and has some REALLY nice riding not to mention some very good bike shops.

So, go there, catch a Sunday race at the 'drome and go do some great riding.
