Why does a shirt made for cycling cost $50+? I know quality costs, but come on, this is a short sleeved shirt, basically polyester. What am I missing?

  1. Remember that you're talking about *technical* clothing.  Such clothing is designed for a specific purpose and made from selected materials that will perform well.  The market for them is very small relative to general clothing, and you won't find these garments sold everywhere.

Short-sleeved, long-sleeved or sleeveless, high quality jerseys can be expensive...easily exceeding $100, often more for wool.  The polyester fibers are selected and woven for their ability to keep you as dry and comfortable as possible, something that cotton can never do.  The pricier jerseys have lots of detailing, including extensive tailoring to conform to your body, rear pockets, raglan sleeves, and a half or full front zipper so you can manage ventilation.  Thus, *technical* clothing.

If you just don't believe you have a need for all these details but still want something to wick moisture off your skin, you can go with inexpensive running/gym shirts available all over the place, including xmart stores.

For something middle of the road, Performance Bike and Nashbar are two retailers that sell their own branded cycling clothing.  Their low-priced jerseys offer good moisture management, zippers and pockets.  You can sometimes find them on sale for $15 to $20...not much more than you'd pay for a Champion running shirt at xmart.

  2. I know what you mean.  I just bought some cycling shorts for $30 and I'm amazed how much difference they make, they are so cool that I don't feel like I am wearing any thing at all.  I started looking at jerseys and cant believe the prices so I just wear T tops.
