Question:

Bikini (or less) Baristas?

In my State the bikini or pastie clad baristas at our coffee stands are causing quite an uproar. People are protesting all over the place. I was listening to a radio talk show last night and a caller stated something to the effect that it is only women that have let their bodies go that have a problem with this, that it is only jealousy. also, she stated she is so self assured that she "sends" her hubby to these stands.....wtf? umm anyway, i could care less, I hope they all practice caution and don't get scaulded. well... maybe i hope, anyway....personally, i would only prefer to know if this is one of those stands or not, before i go there. It should be noted on their sign. sorry, i don't want to go through a pastie drive through with youngish son, color me prude, i don't care. just a little uncomfy for me. I also think it is sad they go to these extremes. It sucks for the stand down the road that has mortgaged their home and gone without to start their own business.

  1. Yeah, I like women and all, but I don't really dig being served food by mostly naked people. Just don't seem right to me.

  2. Well, coupla things.

I agree that it's not appropriate when families will be around.  I certainly wouldn't stop by after church for hot cocoa with the kids.

I also agree that I don't really get much benefit, personally, from seeing a woman in her bikini.  I don't swing that way, so I'd rather skip it, if I had the choice (and considering there are 6 coffee shops in my two-mile-long town, I guess I have an abundance of choice!).

Jealousy has nothing to do with it.  My husband is married, not dead, after all...I certainly hope that he doesn't stop being attracted to s**y women, 'cause that would be a problem for me!

I do have a bit of trouble with the fact that these are probably very young women.  It's not common, after all, for women above the age of 21 to work as baristas...it's often a job for high school or college students.  That makes me think that these women are being taken advantage of by their employer...at that age, there's still a lot of self awareness yet to be learned, and whoever has hired them knows this, and is using it to his advantage.

Secondarily...what's up with the double standard?  Are the guys at the same shops walking around in speedo's (might work better for a lot of women if it were just a tight pair of jeans and no shirt)?

I wouldn't shop there if one of these shops was in my town.  Again, I have quite a few options here, so I'd just go somewhere else (probably next door).

  3. Do you live in the Seattle area? because I know there is currently a big deal about a stand in Auburn, just south of Seattle.

I think there should be 2 requirements.

1st, they need to have tinted windows, shades, or whatever is necessary so that a person who walks or drives by on the street without actually going into (or driving through) the shop can't see anything (either accidentally or on purpose).

2nd, I agree with you that there should be a warning so that if I pull in thinking its just another coffee stand, I'm not offended (or worse, have my child see it) when I get a bouncing surprise at the window.

However, I think its business. s*x sells, it always has and it always will. There are places where you can get your hair cut by a naked female stylist. Even places that don't go to blatant extremes like bikini's or less, use s*x to sell. Go to a fully clothed coffee shop and compare how many cute young women work there verses how many men, fat or ugly women, or older people work there. Most guys won't "stoop" to go to the bikini shop, but you can bet they notice which shops have the cute females and you can also be it influences their decision.

The bottom line is that as long as there are perverts who will pay for lousy coffee just for a glimps at some girl, there will be coffee shops who use s*x to sell. Even if the government outlawed the bikini's, they would still wear low cut shirts, go without bras, and make a point to bend over when they hand you the coffee.

I don't think these girls have low self esteem, in fact they probably think very highly of themselves (dispite what other people think)

  4. Same story different location.  Several counties in Florida had to write a law banning t-back wearing hot dog vendors.  It shameless and if enough people complain they'll get shut down or made to put some clothes on.
