  1. I found mentions of him being a role model by succeeding (first-ever black lead of a weekly dramatic series) but no mention that he had any particular involvement or leadership role in the civil rights movement.

  2. He was a strong role model for black youth, and he produced shows that portrayed positive images of African Americans.

  3. During the 2001 Cincinnati Riots (started by the shooting of a black male by a white police officer) Cosby cancelled a stand-up performance he was to do in the city when black leaders called for a boycott of the city.

Cosby has also been very critical of what he perceives as an acceptance in the black community of fatherless households, as well as high crime and illiteracy rates.  He also believes families need to teach morals and put those at a higher standard than that of sports, fashion, and music.

Look also for information on the "Pound Cake" speech, which he delivered commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling by the Supreme Court.  His comments angered many in the black community but also received much praise.

  4. He was out on TV there when many blacks weren't allowed.  Gave some people a sense of accomplishment and inclusion.
