Bill Cowher has an itch to coach again
Bill Cowher, one of the most sought after free-agent coaches in football, hinted that he is considering getting back into coaching.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Cowher expressed no regrets at stepping down from his position with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but admitted that he still gets the itch to coach a team from time
to time.

"With every year, there becomes a little bit more of a void because you do miss it," Cowher said. "But I had a chance these last few years to spend some very special time with the women in my life. For that,
I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever for walking away."

Cowher's wife, Kaye, died of skin cancer in her native North Carolina this past July. She was 54 years old.

While he admitted that he thinks about coaching from time to time, Cowher said that he would only come back into the right kind of situation.

"I am not going to go back into coaching, just to go back into coaching," Cowher said. "It has to be the right situation. And I don't know what the right situation consists of."

Perhaps due to his proximity, living in North Carolina, Cowher has been mentioned as a potential successor to John Fox's job with the Panthers.

Cowher has been linked to every vacant head coaching job in recent years, with teams such as the Bills, Jets and Browns reported to have contacted Cowher.

Cowher acknowledged Thursday that he has been approached before. "But I never got too far into it," he said.

The "right situation" for Cowher could mean a variety of teams. A team that is ready to compete for a title immediately would obviously be attractive and one possibility could be the Minnesota Vikings. It
has long been rumoured that head coach Brad Childress is not widely respected in the locker room and the Vikings certainly do have some attractive talent.
