Bill Glasson falters badly in the final moments of the Pacific Links Hawai'i Championship
Bill Glasson faltered on the back nine of the course, in the final round of the Pacific Links Hawai'i Championship, and faced a one-stroke defeat against Willie Wood, on Sunday, September 16, 2012.
Glasson started off his final round campaign with a four-stroke lead over Peter Senior and Mark McNulty.
A couple of birdies on the front nine took him further ahead of his rivals in the field. However, he failed to maintain his momentum on the back nine of the course, as he seemed completely out of focus.
After recording a par putt on the 10th hole, he tumbled on the 11th hole for the first bogey of the day. He then tried to offset the lost shot with a birdie on the 12th hole. However, he lost another on the 13th.
The last five holes witnessed him concede three bogeys against two birdies, for an even-par score at the end of the round.
In the meantime, Willie Woods took the advantage and surged to the top of the leaderboard, with another bogey-free round of a six-under par 66.
According to the golf commentators, it was Glasson who handed over the victory to his rival. Otherwise, Glasson clearly had a commanding lead, entering the final eight of the tournament.
"The last six or seven holes were a roller coaster," Glasson said. "It got a little but iffy between clubs out there, but you have to give Woody credit”.
Standing on the 18th tee, Glasson had a clear chance of winning the title with a birdie. However, his second shot found a greenside bunker.
Afterwards, it was essential for him to save the par, in order to force the game to enter the playoffs. However, his par putt skid past the cup and suffered a bogey.
"I hit that putt at 18 too hard. Couldn't get the speed right," Glasson said. "I need to work on some things. If I start missing greens, my short game isn't good enough”.
Meanwhile, Wood pocketed $270,000 and jumped to the 14th place in the Champions Tour money list.
