Bill Guerin released from tryout contract by the Philadelphia Flyers
Veteran forward Bill Guerin’s attempts at signing with a National Hockey League team have hit a bit of a speed bump. Guerin was invited to participate in the Philadelphia Flyers’ training
camp and pre-season games, and was promptly signed to a tryout contract on September 1.
However, the Flyers announced Guerin’s release on Monday, right after the Flyers fell to the Buffalo Sabres in a 9-3 rout on Sunday evening. After the game, Guerin provided an analysis
of his pre-season play.
“I think in the end, maybe I didn't have the best of pre-seasons,” Guerin said. “I did what I could. But I feel that they know what I can do and what I can bring.”
Guerin spent the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, playing alongside the likes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, and other members of the team’s young, talented
core. He won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in the 2008-09 season, and scored 57 points (26 goals, 31 assists) during his stay with the team.
The 6ft 2in native of Worcester, Massachusetts will celebrate his 40th birthday in November, and was looking to make his mark with the Flyers, a team he admitted to having a favourable
view of.
Last season with the Penguins, Guerin scored 21 goals and 24 assists for a total of 45 points in 78 games. But, he was a glaring minus-nine on a very talent-heavy Penguins roster. He would
later add nine points (4G, 5A) in 11 playoff games.
Guerin’s best single-season point total to date was a 69-point (34G, 35A) campaign with the Dallas Stars in 2003-04. In 2001-02, he scored a career-high 41 goals playing with the Boston
Bruins. The right-winger became the 214th NHL player to reach 1,000 games on February 2, 2007.
In 1,263 career NHL games played over 18 seasons, Guerin has amassed totals of 429 goals and 427 assists for 856 points.
