Bill Guerin to try out with the Philadelphia Flyers
He may be nearing 40 years of age, but 17-year National Hockey League veteran Bill Guerin isn’t ready to hang up his skates for good just yet.
The right-winger has agreed to a tryout with the Philadelphia Flyers. Guerin joined the team on 1 September for an informal workout session, and also participated in a scrimmage with 30 other Flyers. Originally his workouts with the team were simply because he was in the area, but it seems the Flyers liked what they saw.
Guerin, who will turn 40 in November, likes the Flyers and is optimistic about a return to action.
“Right now I'm just kind of skating and being around the guys,” Guerin said. “This is a team I would definitely like to play for, but we'll see.”
Guerin spent the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and was part of their Stanley Cup-winning team in 2008-09. He scored a total of 57 points (26 goals, 31 assists) during his time with the Penguins. Last season, he put up totals of 21 goals and 24 assists for 45 points in 78 games. Despite the decent stats, Guerin ended the 2009-10 season as a minus-9. During the playoffs, he registered nine points (4G, 5A) in 11 games.
The 6ft 2in native of Worcester, Massachusetts has amassed 429 goals and 427 assists for 856 points in his career. He was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils fifth overall in the first round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, and played his first full season in 1992-93. He won the first of his two Stanley Cup championships with the Devils in 1994-95.
Guerin scored a career-high 69 points (34G, 35A) in 2003-04. He also had a 41-goal season with the Boston Bruins in 2001-02. On 2 February 2007, Guerin became the 214th NHL player to reach the 1,000 games played mark.
The American became an unrestricted free agent after the Penguins chose not to re-sign him. Guerin was later released by the team on 27 August.
