Bill Haas secures AT&T National title – Golf news
Bill Haas extended his winning-streak on the PGA Tour to fourth straight year, as he closed his campaign at the Congressional Country Club on top of the leaderboard, to win the AT&T National.
The American, who has been recording at least one PGA Tour victory each year since his first victory at the 2010 Bob Hope Classic, finished with a five under par 66 on day four, to finish 12 under for the week.
That was three better than overnight co-leader Roberto Castro, who went round in 69 for a nine-under par tournament score to finish second, with DH Lee and Jason Kokrak a further stroke back on eight under.
Starting on the front nine of the course, he birdied the second hole and lost it on the fifth. He then reeled in three straight birdies, starting from the eighth hole, before adding another two shots on the 14th and the 16th hole. At the end of the day,
he found himself adding the fifth PGA Tour title to his resume.
“This year I think I put in a little bit more work than I have in the previous years — easy to say now that it's paying off,” he said. “But all the best players, they're working hard. And the best players ... there is a level, and I'd love to be a part of
that. But the way you guys and the golf world ranks us, it's by the majors.”
Talking to the reporters, he also expressed his wish of joining the league of major golf championship winners, having finished runner-up at the US Open last month.
“I would like to be part of that,” Haas said. “But honestly, I would just like to work hard, see the results, and if the next level comes, then I welcome it.”
Castro, in the meantime, was a bit disappointed with his final round performance. His round included a total of three birdies, against a lone bogey, which was not enough for him to secure his first PGA Tour victory.
At the same time, he expressed his pleasure in contending strongly in the event, and plans to keep the momentum going to record his maiden victory on the tour.
