Bill Hall’s decisive RBI single helps Houston Astros beat St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 – MLB Update
Houston Astros’ second baseman Bill Hall took an RBI single in the ninth inning which resulted in the Astros 6-5 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals at Minute Maid Park in Houston on April 26.
Hall said of his performance, “Anytime somebody gets... [on base] to give me a chance to hit and I don't succeed, I want another shot. I was able to get another shot. I hit the same ground ball and if they're in double play depth it's probably another double
play ball.”
Hall hit a grounder for an amazing double play in the seventh inning and loaded the bases during the ninth inning to give the Astros a convincing win. Michael Bourn hit the ball and attained first base on the error of the Cardinals’ closer Mitchell Boggs.
Meanwhile, Brian Bogusevic posted a run on Boggs’ wild pitch towards third base.
Hunter Pence and Angel Sanchez both had an impressive day with the bat as they took singles on the loaded bases. Pence had three brilliant hits with five at-bats and also struck a massive home-run in the fourth inning to give the Astros initial runs. Chris
Johnson went 2-for-4 and hit two RBI singles for the Astros. During the sixth inning, Sanchez made a single when Carlos Lee availed the error of the Cardinals’ third baseman David Freese.
The Astros closer Brandon Lyon gave away one run on two hits in one inning pitches. He struck-out one batter to restrict the Cardinals from scoring.
On the other side, Lance Berkman did an extra-ordinary job by extending the Cardinals’ lead 5-4 when he took an RBI single against Lyon in the ninth inning. Berkman was honoured by the fans after his first single, but he was hit out while trying to steal
second base. He joined the Cardinals in the Major League Baseball off-season through a trade with the New York Yankees.
Berkman was satisfied with himself as he said, “It's my job to drive guys in when I have the chance, and I had the chance to do it in the ninth to give us a chance to win the game. They did a great job coming back. The bottom line is that we didn't win the
game, and that's not good.”
The Cardinals’ starter Jamie Garcia had a shaky performance throughout the game as he permitted four runs on six hits including three earned runs and struck out six batters in five inning pitches. Boggs had a disappointing day as he gave two runs on four
hits in ninth inning and was unable to throw for his first save.
