Bill Parcells ready to help out New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton in any manner - NFL News
Future Hall of Fame coach, Bill Parcells, is ready to help his good friend Sean Payton, in any manner necessary and it seems that the 70-year-old is likely to take over the role of New Orleans Saints head coach for a year as Payton serves his suspension.
Parcells speaking to ESPN said if the opportunity presents itself and he is offered the role he would definitely think over it.
"If the opportunity presents itself, I'll think it over and clearly I'm in some phase of the process without knowing whether it's going to become a reality. Sean's become a dear, dear friend. I'm trying to be a friend.”
He also went on to add during the interview that.
"You know, when I was a young coach, there were people like Chuck Noll, Chuck Knox and Tom Landry who were there for me. If he needs me and the owner and GM feel the same way, then I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't consider it."
Both Parcells and Payton know each other well and have become good friends over the years. Payton served as the offensive coordinator during the veteran coach’s stint as head of the Dallas Cowboys.
Payton is currently working with Saints general manager, Mickey Loomis, to find an interim head coach for the franchise for the 2012-13 season.
The Saints head coach will start serving a one year suspension starting April 1st and is not allowed to work in the National Football League (NFL) under any capacity.
Payton will look to select a coach on an interim basis before the start of his suspension and it seems that Parcells is his first choice to take over.
Parcells though is still unsure whether he would be offered the role. The 70-year-old went on to say that Payton is not doing the hiring and it all depends on whether general manager Mickey Loomis and owner Tom Benson believe that he is able to help.
He also confirmed that he had played golf with Loomis and they did discuss the role but nothing is certain as of now.
The Saints are currently reeling from some of the heaviest punishments ever given to a NFL franchise for running an illegal bounty scheme in the defensive roster.
