Bill approved! Golf carts are legal on California's streets
Good news for golfers as a latest bill in La Grange, Carolina allows them to drive golf carts on the streets.
La Grange Town Manager John Craft confirmed the news in a press conference on Wednesday evening. Craft said, “Taking in view the success of Winterville ordinance, Pitt County town will be seeing golf carts on the streets. The council met and discussed the possibilities and we think we can utilize it in a positive manner.”
Craft presented the idea of expanding the boundaries of golf carts during Monday's session and not a single council member agreed to the notion. The general concern of the members was the security and traffic issues that would arise with the passing of the bill.
However, a public meeting was called in which the residents of the county were invited for an open discussion regarding the matter. None of the residents spoke against the notion. In fact, it was highlighted that the carts would gather international media and tourist attention as it was a rare act.
The vote of concern was taken and by Tuesday, all six members of the council had cast their votes. The results fell in favour of the bill, as five members voted in favour of golf carts being driven on roads of La Grange. However, Councilman Clifton Harrison voted against the notion. His concern stemmed out because of a possible rise in traffic accidents and law enforcement issues on California's roads.
Harrison spoke to the press after the general meeting subsided and said, “From the viewpoint of safety on streets and an increased task for law enforcement and the town, it worried me.”
Despite Harrison’s disagreement, the bill was passed and so were the rules and regulations that were linked with it. As per details, no golf cart may be operated at any time at a speed greater than 25 mph and drivers will have to comply with all the traffic rules laid by the State of North Carolina. The rules also state that no person below the age of 16 will be permitted to drive while driving under the influence will not be prohibited.
