  1. There are three major sub divisions in cue games.

    1)Carom Billiards 2) Pocket Billiards  3)Snooker.

Pocket Billiards is commonly referred to as Pool and it is played on a specific class of billiards table having 6 pockets.

This is commonly called 'Pool' because of its association with 'Poolrooms' where gamblers Pooled their money to bet on horse races. These venues had billiards tables and so the word 'Pool' got associated with Billiards.

Original pool game was played on pocketless tables but the name 'Pool' got stuck to Pocket billiards because of its popularity.

  2. Outside the cue sports industry, pocket billiards is almost exclusively referred to as "pool," due to a perhaps unfortunate association with the "poolrooms" where gamblers "pooled" their money to bet remotely ("off-track") on horse races.

Because these venues often provided billiard tables, the term "pool" became synonymous with billiards, and though the original "pool" game was played on a pocketless table, the name stuck to pocket billiards as it gained in popularity. Though the traditional view of billiards as a refined and noble pastime did not blend well with the low-class connotations of gambling, the billiards industry's attempts to distance itself from the term "pool" beginning in the late 19th century were largely unsuccessful.

  3. First two answers are correct. The term ''billiards'' is often used to refer to all cue sports including billiards , pool and sometimes snooker.
