Billy Horschel takes home his first PGA Tour title in New Orleans
Billy Horschel birdied the last hole in the final round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to record the first PGA Tour victory of his career, on Sunday, April 28, 2013.
The US$6.6 million PGA Tour event was being played at TPC Louisiana, featuring some of the best players from different parts of the world.
Horschel, who was sharing the top spot with DA Points, entering the final round, parred each of the first four holes that he played, before going one-under par through five holes.
He then recorded a par putt on the sixth hole, prior to stunning each of his opponents in the field by draining six consecutive par putts, starting in the seventh hole.
Points, in the meantime, also showed consistency in his game and birdied six of the first 13 holes to remain in contention for a victory in the tournament.
Entering the 15th hole, Horschel had a one-stroke lead over Points, which he lost by conceding a bogey. The very next hole witnessed him taking the lead back, as he drained his seventh birdie putt of the day.
On the last hole, Points recorded birdie and created a good chance to force the game to enter into the sudden death playoffs.
However, Horschel declined his offer for the playoffs by recording birdie on the final hole, and finished the tournament on top of the leaderboard. With this victory, Horschel became the sixth first time PGA Tour winner this year.
“This whole week I felt like I'm going to get my victory here, and I have a friend of mine I met a couple years ago, Thomas Capella. After I almost won in San Antonio, he text me and said, don't worry about it. Your first one will be here in New Orleans,
and I was like, I wish it was sooner,” Horschel said.
“This one means a lot. It's something I've worked so hard for,” he added. “Man, for that putt to go in -- I said, 'I'm due for a long one.' It came off the putter so good and I'm so glad it went in”.
