Billy Mayfair withdraws from the Zurich Classic of New Orleans – Golf News
Billy Mayfair has announced his withdrawal from the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, at the TPC Louisiana in Avondale, scheduled to start from April 26 to 29, 2012.
He was one of the most anticipated players in this year's edition because of his last year’s performance in the event.
He was tied for the eighth position after carding a 10-under par 278 tournament score. The highlights of his performance in 2011 included seven birdies against two bogeys in the final round.
This year, he appeared to be in a great form again, to make a start in New Orleans. Recently, he participated in the RBC Heritage and tied for the fourth position on the leaderboard.
Therefore, he would have been a great contender in the tournament if he had not removed his name from the published list of the tournament’s field.
He has now reached the age of 45. Yet, he has improved his game in the past few years, and is trying to make a comeback with a victory on the PGA Tour.
There was a time when he used to threaten his opponents in each of the tournaments that he used to play.
In the Nissan Open in 1998, he defeated Tiger Woods in the playoffs and holds the distinction of being the only one to achieve that mark against Woods.
The Buick Open in 1998 was his last victory on the PGA Tour, when he defeated Scott Verplank with a two-stroke margin.
Thereafter, he started losing control over his game and faded in his past wins. However, he did not lose hope and kept working hard on his game.
Now, he is among the few players who, at the age of 45 or above, play on a full schedule on the PGA Tour. He is currently playing his 24th consecutive year on the PGA Tour.
His absence from the tournament will be greatly felt, especially by his local fans, who wanted him to end his wining drought on the Tour.
Meanwhile, Bubba Watson headed for the New Orleans to defend his title as he announced his participation recently on a TV show.
