Billy Tuten eyeing 15th State Championship win at the TAPPS Class 5A championships – Golf News
St. Thomas golf coach Billy Tuten is eyeing a win in the TAPPS Class 5A championships at the Wildflower Country Club in Temple, to be played on Monday and Tuesday next week.
St. Thomas golf team has registered a total of 14 wins in different state events. This year, Tuten is hoping to add one more to the record by earning his first win in the TAPPS state championship.
The United States Golf Association has recently honoured him for his great contributions to the game of golf, while celebrating the 30th anniversary of his consecutive wins in the U.S. Amateur Public Links championships.
Since then, he won different tournaments as a players as well as a coach for different teams. However, a win in the TAPPS state championship means a great deal to him.
In addition to that, his main focus is to bring cheers on the faces of his team members, who have been working hard for many years to register their 15th state championship win.
For this purpose, he wants his players to play their natural game in order to get the best out of them.
According to Tuten, he will try to avoid making extra efforts that may ruin his team’s natural talent of playing a good game. He just wants his team members to take the tournament just like other normal tournaments.
"I don't want us to go over there and, because it's the state tournament, try extra hard or try to be perfect or anything," Tuten said.
"We have a good enough team where, if we go play well, we can have some success. We don't have to play way above our heads".
TAPPS Class 5A championship is an invitation based event. Tuten’s team received an invitation due to its stunning end to the 2011 season.
The Eagles, St. Thomas golf team, registered a win in the d**k Harmon Memorial in December, 2011.
"When they started that tournament, one of my goals for the team was just to get invited to it because it's invitation only and they try to pick the best teams in the metro area," Tuten said.
"So I was happy this past fall to be invited to the tournament, and then to go win was something I couldn't have fathomed".
