Executive Director Camilla Herlevich began the local chapter in 1992 with three employees. Today, the work of the land trust spans to 30 coastal counties.

"There wasn't an entity in the entire coastal plain for regional coastal conservation projects. It was established so there would be an organization to do some local conservation," Herlevich said.

The land trust works with land owners to conserve open coastal areas which would be beneficial to the public. Saving these areas helps ensure the preservation of wildlife habitat, forests and water quality and offers historical and recreational opportunities.

The properties are primarily obtained through tax-deductible donations.

If funding is available, the land trust may purchase qualifying properties.
