BioWare ‘hoping for a big hit’ with Mass Effect 3, RPG elements tweaked – PS3, Xbox360, PC
It seems that BioWare are focusing on making Mass Effect 3 the best game in the series so far and giving the franchise a worthy farewell, as the developer are making a number of changes to the game.
While not tampering too much with the core Mass Effect experience, which has earned them numerous Game of the Year awards and a fair amount of revenue, the developers are looking to make a few slight changes to the game dynamics.
Firstly, BioWare are upping the scale; the game features a full on war between the forces of Earth and the invading Reapers, and in honour of the scope of the battles, have increased the size of the bosses. The demo at E3 showing the fight sequence between
Sam Shepard, the protagonist, and the 50-foot-tall Reaper, was just one of the examples.
David Silverman, the head of marketing at BioWare, explained what the mindset was going into the game, “This is definitely the best chance we have in the series to really break out and go truly blockbuster.”
Silverman also pointed out that he wished the game would go on to be a success and touted the game to be the best one the studio have ever worked on, “We're hoping for a big hit. It's the best game we've ever made at BioWare Edmonton. The stuff we're doing
- making the gameplay more action-adventure-y, making it on a par with some of the best action games you see today, whilst on top of that adding in these RPG elements that maybe people were upset we didn't focus on as much in Mass Effect 2 - it strikes a balance.”
That is something readers will also have picked up from the statement in the tweaks that have been made to the gameplay. While nothing major, the ‘action-adventure-y’ bit sounded as intriguing as it did amusing.
While Mass Effect has a feel of its own, it seems to be focusing more on an Uncharted like experience as opposed to the all out shooter approach. This will go a long way in helping bring story elements into a core part of the gameplay, not that it is not
already a major part.
Also, the RPG elements seem to be there to support the increased emphasis on action-adventure-yness, which the game is trying to adopt. So far, it seems that BioWare have things under control, but no one will know for sure when the game releases in an, as
yet unconfirmed, 2012 release date.
We will be bringing you more updates on Mass Effect 3 and other gaming news as and when they are announced.
