I am an Independent Studies student at Indiana University. Has anyone out in Answerland taken a course named Bioanthropology. I want to take an Anthropolgy class but they're so darn expensive on my own dime I want to take a class that I'll enjoy. Thanks, I enjoy the Social Sciences in general.

  1. I went to undergrad at Duke where one of my majors was something called Biological Anthropology and Anatomy.  This class sounds like something I would have taken and I found my major very interesting.  Basically human evolution/biology and how social aspects influenced them. (for ex, the bipedal walk of man= a result of evolutionary pressure to walk longer distances and be able to hold fruit/children)  If you love thinking about the intersection of biology/evolution and culture you should like that class.  Good luck in your decision!

  2. What is now considered Biological Anthropology was called Physical Anthropology when I was an Anthro major in the early '80s.  Biological anthropology, or physical anthropology is a branch of anthropology that studies the evolution, genetic inheritance, human adaptability/variation, primatology, and the fossil record of human evolution.

The other branches of anthropology include linguistics, archaeology, and cultural anthropology.  Although my interest was in cultural anthropology, I really enjoyed my physical (biological) anthro courses.

  3. Do you like human anatomy, biology, human evolution, learning about primatology, and hominid fossils??? If you answered yes to any of the above you probably wouldn't mind taking the Bioanthropology course. This particular course falls into the Physical Anthropology subfield of Anthropology. One thing to note, this class really shouldn't be classified as a social science course because it tends to lean more towards biology. If you have any questions or concerns that I may not have addressed, drop me an email.
