I'm planning to enter dental school. I have finish with all my prerequisites except for the advance science courses. This semester I'm taking human physiology and immunology and 2 other classes under the health science major.

I already taken gen chem 1, but drop part 2 because I forgot most of the stuff. The only class I'm worried about is organic chem 1 and 2, and biochem 1. Is it true you have to take general chemistry part 2 before you take organic chemistry. Then you have to finish organic to take biochem? I want to finish in 2 years.

Is organic way different fromt he general stuff. I mean I made an A in general chemistry 1 but I really hated it. I was wondering is organic chemistry on a whole other level.

  1. Yes.

Organic is more naming, and reaction classes.

  2. Organic chem is more involved in such topics as reaction  mechanisms, stereochemistry ( compounds that are related as arrangement of atoms in space ), and synthesis of compounds, as well as methods of determining structure of compounds, NMR, IR, UV, etc . Biochem is involved with mechanisms and activites of the major classes of organic compounds in the body, proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and how they can interact to maintain homeostasis in the body.

  3. Just personal experience...I am a junior in nursing school...I took general chem as a refresher course.  I then went straight into biochem 1 & 2.  It was easy (Got A's in both, just a lot of memorization!).  I did not have to take general chem 2, nor did I have to take organic chemistry.  I would talk to your advisor because every college has a different set of guidelines and courses that are required.  So, to answer your question, there is no correct answer you can receive from us.  You need to talk to your advisor.
