1.  Diversity of organisms present.  When an ecosystem has reached a stable climax community, its biodiversity is often great, allowing it to withstand much variation in abiotic changes.

Medical researchers are worried about biodiversity loss, especially in rainforest areas, because many plant species produce pharmacologically active chemicals that can be used to treat a number of diseases and disorders.  Over 1/4 of our drugs contain phytochemicals.  When biodiversity is lost, it is likely there are species of plants we may never be able to study.
