  1. Many farmers are planting more corn to harvest for fermentation into alcohol.

Soybeans are being grown for soy diesel.

Switch grass is a plant that animals do not eat that can be fermented into alcohol.

In Brazil, sugar cane is used for alcohol.

Most any plant product can be fermented.

Some can be used to generate methane, natural gas.

  2. I can answer the second question..i'm not sure about the first. To obtain bio fuel from plants, they have to be processed through a gasification plant. All the information you need to know is on wikipedia about that...it helped very much when I did my paper on biofuel.

  3. Common plants cultivated for bio fuel in the United States are corn and soybeans.  Corn is converted into ethanol through distillation as a gasoline additive while soybean oil is converted into diesel after extracting the oil from the beans.

Sugar cane is cultivated in Brazil for ethanol and has been very successful for them - the vast majority of the cars in Brazil run on ethanol.

  4. In the UK a great deal of Rape Seed is grown - one crop can be used for multiple purposes:

    - Vegetable oil for cooking - which can then be converted to bio-diesel!

    - Animal feed

    - Fuel briquettes ...

Essential all of the above are produced by crushing the plant and using the pulp and oil separately, or combined.
