3. Experimental Design. This is the instructions to the experiment so someone

else can repeat it and the results of the experiment.

4. Conclusion. The validity of the hypothesis

5. - 6. Identify the following

Variable(s)

Why is the above designated a variable(s)?

Invariables (s)

Why are the above designated as invariables?

  1. The batteries are dead and replacing the old batteries with new batteries will make the flashlight work.

If replacing the batteries makes the flashlight work, the above hypothesis is true. If replacing the batteries does not make the flashlight work the hypothesis is false.

You could then choose a new hypothesis such as: The flashlight has a loose wire and shaking the flashlight will cause the flashlight to work.

    You get the idea?

    So your design would be:

    turn on flashlight (not working)

    replace batteries

    turn on flashlight

Conclusion: did it work? If yes, you conclude the hypothesis is correct and the batteries are dead. If not you conclude the hypothesis is false, because changing the batteries didn't make the flashlight work.

Variable is the batteries (these were changed)

Invariable is the flashlight (this was not changed). You could give others like the temperature of the test center. Both were probably done at room temperature. But you could have made this a variable if you hypothesised the flashlight wasn't working because it was in an icy environment and there was a build up of ice on the flashlight, so you would test it after it defrosted. :) The batteries is a safe hypothesis, but you could use your imagination to come up with something extravagant as long as you could test it.
