  1. small cells are more efficient than large ones because small cells have a high surface area to volume ratio.  also large cells require greater structure to maintain stability.  one more thing.  cells communicate with one another by chemical signaling.  the shorter the distance a chemical messenger has to travel from the cell membrane to the nucleus, the faster that cell can respond to changes in its environment.  there are some instances where a large cell is preferred though.  the best example is an ostrich egg which is one big cell.

  2. Imagine you consisted of just two large cells and one dies due to a viral infection and the other is killed when bumping into something.

  3. Well with small cells their are thousands many with different mutations. some may be resistant to penicillin while others aren't, so if you were made up of a few you may not be able to resist many things. Say you're about to walk through a chlorine cloud. If you're three cells most likely you'll die. If you're 100,000 odds are at least one will be resistant, and survive the chlorine. then that would reproduce and you'd survive.
