2.) Which of the following discoveries occurring after the common ancestry theory was proposed has provided strong supporting evidence for it?

a.) Maggots do not grow on meat in jars that are covered.

b.)Organisms do not grow on broth that is boiled in swan-necked flasks.

c.)All cells have the molecule DNA as a basis for genetic inheritance.

d.)All organisms are made up of cells

3.) Which of the following is the basis for natural selection to occur?

a.)There are many breeds of dogs, all of the same species.

b.)Humans can affect evolution through artificial selection.

c.)All organisms arose from a common ancestor.

  1. 1) population is groups of individuals that occur together at one place and time.

(At first I said community, but I rechecked and this is what my book said, "Community is ALL organisms that live together in a place." so since you want individual species, then it's population.)

    2) C  DNA is the base of common ancestory. The only way for an organism to evolve off of the ancestor is for the DNA to be changed (by a few nucletides) or read differently by the organism.

    3) D  natural selection happens when an organism is born in a way that is different, but the same as the organism it came from. This differences allows it to better adapt to its surroundings, like having webbed hands when the species live near water. Adaptions also allows for better survival of that individual, so more opportunity to reproduce.

  2. 1. Community.

You said "a group of individuals" which consistutes not only one type of organism (else would've been POPULATION) but several types and lives in the same area, which is community. Family is only for same species in the same population. Genus only refers to the species, not the "living in the same area" part. I can't agree on Populations for this one. I don't know what you mean by "a group of individual's If they're all the same species then population could work but I see your question as a group of different species (since you didn't specify) living in the same area. That HAS to be community since, based on your question, it mentions the area it lives as a significance.

    2. C

c**p forgot what Common Ancestry is... had to look up! http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2007/... yes all cells have the molecule DNA as a basis for genetic inheritance. DNA's used as a blueprint to all organisms and is responsible for passing on genes and inheritance, also responsible for the characteristics and traits of different parts of animals. DNA is like a cell's control center. Without it it can't function at all since DNA is responsible for protein synthesis and all that stuff.  So C IS right... (Sorry for being dumb). It DOES provide strong supporting evidence!

    3. D

Only the organisms that are best fit (must have favorable characterstics by the organism and its surroundings. For example, a catapillar can live on a leaf but if it's like 90 degrees outside and a bunch of eagles flying around it wouldn't have the characteristics, both external and internal, to survive) are capable of passing on their own species. So D is correct. A, B, and C does not point toward anything about survival and reproduction of species, which is what natural selection is generally about.

  3. number 3 is d

  4. 1)  population

    3) d. Natural selection is a selection mechanism which favours organisms with advantageous characteristics to survive and breed and eliminates those that are weak.

  5. population
