I am learning about taxonomy. Here is the question I'm stuck on.

Q: The second sentence of this passage states that Linnaeus described a "ranked system of groups that incrase in inclusiveness." What does this mean?

The passage they're talking about is this:

Linnaeus worked out a broad system of classification for plants and animals in which an organism's form and structure are the basis for arranging specimens in a collection. He later organized the genera and species that he described into a ranked system of groups that increase in inclusivenesss. The different groups into which organisms are classified have expanded since Linnaeus's time and now consist of eight levels.

  1. In the defense forces there are Ranks that are well recognized and have definite meanings

    Examples are ==

    Navies1 Armies2 Air Forces3

    (((Admiral of

the Fleet))) Field Marshal Marshal of

    the Air Force

    Admiral General Air Chief Marshal

Vice Admiral Lt. General Air Marshal

Rear Admiral Major General Air Vice-Marshal

    Commodore Brigadier Air Commodore

    Captain Colonel Group Captain

    Commander Lt. Colonel Wing Commander

    Lt. Commander Major Squadron Leader

    Lieutenant Captain Flight Lieutenant

    Sub-Lieutenant Lieutenant Flying Officer

Warrant Officer Warrant Officer Warrant Officer

    Petty Officer Sergeant Sergeant

    Leading Rate Corporal Corporal

    ((((Seaman)))) Private Aircraftman

In the above nomenclature if you look at the Navy alone then(((Admiral of the fleet ))) is the highest rank and all are below him. And ((( Sea man ))) is the lowest rank and all are above him.

This is to explain you about the word rank.

Linnaeus, likewise established a RANKED system of classification in a definite descending / ascending order .

Every Rank has a definite term and meaning ( such as Kingdom , division , order , phylum genus and species )

Likewise every rank Must show certain features ( you may call it exclusive / inclusive depends on how you interpret it)

Now let us see classification of Indian bull frog to see the eight levels of Ranks in classification==

    Scientific classification

    Kingdom: Animalia (1) ( All animals )

Phylum: Chordata (2)  ( Only those animals that have Notochord )

Subphylum: Vertebrata (3) ( Only those animals that have vertebral column  OR Back bone on the Dorsal side )

Class: Amphibia (4) ( Can spend life on land as well as in water )

    Order: Anura (5 )

    Family: Ranidae (6 )

    Genus: Hoplobatrachus ( 7 )

    Species: H. tigerinus ( 8 )

    Binomial name

Hoplobatrachus tigerinus ( The Indian Bull Frog )

    Synonyms

Rana tigerina ( older name )

Rana tigrina   ( Older name )

Now let us take plant classification ,say classification of Rose =

    Scientific classification

Kingdom: Plantae ( All plants are here )

Division: Magnoliophyta ( Only Flowering plants are here )

Class: Magnoliopsida ( Only dicot plants are here )

    Order: Rosales

    Family: Rosaceae

    Subfamily: Rosoideae

    Genus: Rosa

    L.

    Species

    Rosa canina

Now Refer your books and notes

    From = Botanist

  2. Nesting categories. Similar species would be grouped as a genus. Groups of related genuses (geni, really) are clustered in families, which is a more inclusive group than a genus. Orders are groups of families and are more inclusive than families. Up we go through ever more inclusive taxa, to classes (groups off orders), then phyla and kingdoms. There is now the concept of domains, which are groups of kingdoms, like Eukaryota, which includes plants, animals, protists and fungi - all of life except eubacteria and archaea - certainly a very inclusive group.
