How do mitosis and meiosis maintain the same chromosomal number of a species generation after generation?

  1. Mitosis just makes identical copies or "daughter cells"

    Meiosis is used to make gametes. It starts off similar to Mitosis, makes a copy of DNA but instead of dividing once it divides twice so it has half the genetic information of a normal cell. After sexual reproduction two of these gametes (one from each parent) then combine to form a complete set of DNA in the new cell in a process called fertilization.
