Where does evapotranspiration mainly occur in leaves – on the upper or lower surface and why?

  1. Generally on the lower surface, because that is the side with more stomata.


  2. The stomatal density (# per unit area) is frequently higher on the underside of the leaf.  This ensures that evapotranspiration will tend to be higher from this surface.
