  1. 1. Vascular tissue is tissue in plants that transports water and nutrients up through fibers in the plant.

    2. Xylem and phloem

    3. Xylem is made of dead cells such as sieve tube members that are long. Phloem is made of living cells.

    4. Xylem transports water from the roots upwards. Phloem transports nutrients (food and sugars made in the leaves) down from the leaves through the rest of the plant.

    5. Xylem uses the pull of transpiration and the forces of cohesion and adhesion to draw water up the stem. Phloem uses gravitational pull.

  2. What is the definition and function of a vascular tissue?

ANSWER  Vascular tissues in a plant transport water, dissolved food and soil nutrient around the plant.

What are the two types of vascular tissue?

ANSWER Xylem transports water and soil nutrients upwards from the roots to the leaves. Phloem transports sugars, mainly glucose, downwards from the leaves to parts of the plants which cannot photosynthesise.

    How are they structurally different?

ANSWER Xylem is dead tissue composed of long hollow tubes and is strengthened by rings of lignin. Associated with Xylem vessels are smaller tubes called tracheids. Phloem vessels are living tissue. The internal contents of cells disintegrate and the end walls become perforated into sieve plates. Although the phloem tissue has no nucleus, they are associated with companion cells which are nucleated and functions as nuclei for both.

What material does each type of vascular tissue transport and in what direction?

ANSWER Xylem transports water and soil nutrients, phloem transports sugars.

By what processes does each vascular tissue move material around in the plant?

ANSWER The transport of water by xylem vessels is called transpiration. The transport of sugars by phloem vessels is called translocation.

    Hope this helps!
