Biology report - can you put diagrams/pictures in the introduction?

My friend said I shouldn't, but if I am describing a signaling pathway, would it not make sense to visually see it next to the text? She said it should be put at the back in an appendix.

  1. In the introduction, you should be simply stating what you will be discussing in the paper.  You need to make the reader trust that you know what you'll be discussing, adding a picture or diagram so early on won't do this.
