Question:

Bioluminescent bay? Vieques? Farjardo?

After doing some reading, I see that Vieques and Fajardo are the 2 spots to do a bio-bay tour. I see that kayaking is a better experience. I will be on my honeymoon in September during a "great" viewing part of the moon cycle. The problem is that I am only staying 2 days before boarding a cruise ship and we have a hotel booked in Condado.

I am looking for the best experience. I also want to make sure I can get to and from the location in time to return to the hotel at night. I read somewhere that in Vieques, you cannot get back due to Ferry times?? In any case, is Farjardo just as good? Can I make it there back and forth? Is there a tour in Vieques that includes travel arrangements AND a kayak experience? Please help.

  1. I took a kayak trip to the BioBay in Fajardo.  At the time we were allowed to swim in it.  Not sure if the previous poster took a different tour than I or if there is new regulations that prevent it.  I went about 5 years ago.  I think our kayak guide was the only one at the time that allowed people to do this.  I haven't been on any of the big boats, but I did love being able to put my hand in the water and swish it around!  I also very much enjoyed swimming in it - but unsure if you'll be able to do that.  Farjardo is easy to reach and return in the same day from San Juan.  I can't compare it to Vieques because I haven't been there, but I don't think you'll be disappointed if you have to go to Farjardo instead - it's very cool.  I wish I still had the name of the kayak guide, but I booked through the B&B and not sure what the name of the company was.

  2. Hey

Im from Puerto Rico, I know Fajardo have a bioluminescent bay butI've never been there before but some friestold methat its beutiful, also fajardo its just like 45 min to one hour from condado, depends on the traffic. Go to vieques it a risk because almost everytime  ferry got completly full and you willl have to stay there but there a a small airport in fajardo where you can buy tickets to vieques roundtrip i think it cost around 30 eachway and it took like 15 minutes in air. Sorry I dont have here the information of the airport but you can findit here on internet I always use a airline called  "airflamenco" www.airflamenco.net.

hope you can find what your looking

  3. I think they stopped allowing swimming in the Fajardo bio-bay a year or two ago. I have been to both and enjoyed the Vieques experience more, but really both were great. If you cannot find a way to Vieques and back without staying over then go for the Fajardo bio-bay. The websites listed in the answer by coquishideaway are the same I would list - they are helpful.

  4. I have been to both BioBays and I think the best experience is the Vieques BioBay via pontoon boat.

Forget the ferry- the last one leaves Vieques  early (before dark), and they stop flying the planes also before dark.

The only way to get the the Vieques one without staying overnight is to take the East Wind Catamaran trip.  They leave Fajardo at 5pm and return at about 10pm.  Great trip.  Here is my experience and contact info:

The Fajardo BioBay is really bright also, but you can't swim in it.   We enjoyed kayaking  into the bay, but it is not what I would call a "better experience", unless you really like kayaking.  It is a good workout.

Here is my experience at the Fajardo BioBay:
