  1. Part of the fun of the game is playing through it and learning the background of the mysterious underwater city as you do.  Without giving away details of how the city went all to h**l as you found it, I will say it is supposedly inspired by Ayn Rand's novel "Atlas Shrugged," and was a city founded loosely on Libertarian principles:  Minimum government, maximum individual freedoms in both the social and economic spheres.  I believe the game is set sometime in the 1950's.

My brother was very excited about the game when he started playing it, and I was burnt-out on FPS's at the time, so I didn't try it for awhile, but once I did I was hooked.  Give it a shot, it's one of the best games I've played, with a very unique setting that really drew me in.  If you like history (especially alternate histories) or are a Libertarian, you'll enjoy it even more.

  2. pretty fun game huh? I played the demo and i was pretty confused by it too. Heres something i found on wikipedia

At the start of the game, Jack (the character controlled by the player) is a passenger on a plane that goes down in the Atlantic Ocean in 1960, after ordered society in Rapture has collapsed. After surfacing, Jack finds himself the only survivor of the crash, and swims to a nearby lighthouse, where he finds a bathysphere which he uses to descend into the ocean and enter the failed "paradise" of Rapture.
