Bipolar disorder Or not?

Well, i've got this friend, she's 16 now, we've been friends for almost three years now, and i've noticed some major changes over the past two years, her parents are getting a divorce, and threw the past two years her parents have had some major fights, physical and verbal which i know has affected her, her mother has bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, her mother is addicted to alcohol and her mother has attempted siucide four times and everytime my friend was with her mother and the last siucide affected her a lot, it's like she died, inside. She started drinking at 13 and smoking at 14 and started smoking weed at 15, she also did cocaine for the first time at 15 and have done so a lot more. She started using ecstacy when she turned 16 and a lot of painkillers, she also huffs gas and other substances and now smokes weed almost daily and still does a lot of painkillers, she's also done acid. Although her mother caught her with weed and ecstacy, she hasnt stopped. She also cuts herself, i know she's not seeking attention cause she hides it. She started cutting at 13 and now the cuts are big and she seems to be cutting everyday. She told me she started Bulimia when she was 15, but said she stopped and she has lost a lot of weight. The other night she was so hyper active, jumping around, she talked fast and after a while she couldnt speak normally, she told me her brain works too fast and then she's unable to speak normally cause she thinks of many things at once. She was like this for about a week, but only had the hyperness a few times and she becomes either extremely happy or very angry and when she becomes angry she hits things and break things, she also mentioned that she feels high and not herself, she said she's terrified of herself cause she cant control it. But after that she became dead again, zombie like, she's also hyper sensitive. She also said she thinks of suicide a lot, almost everyday and she's attempted siucide when she was 13. In the past she wanted to run away from home, but never did. she told me she wrote her parents a letter, asking them for help, but they said she should snap out of it and that really screwed her up. She's my best friend and i would really like to know how to help. Her brother also has bipolar disorder, his 5 years older than her, and i was wondering if she has bipolar disorder as well, since it's genetic? cause i know normal people dont behave like this. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. well, first off i was going to tell you to stay away from the friend,as to all the drugs she uses.

but since its your "best friend" i couldn't do that.

if her parents won't help her, tell your parents and maybe they could.

and when she was so hyped up, she was likely on speed.

and yes, she does have bipolar disorder.

    my cousins all have it,too.

they can act pretty strangely too.

    good luck.

  2. For more info about bipolar disorder see http://www.identifybipolardisorder.com

  3. Because of her family she has a genetic predisposition to bipolar disorder and addiction....from your writing it sounds more like she is just acting how people do when they are that ind of narcotic cocktail...and it sounds like she is making a recipe for self-destruction...as her friend I would ask to please speak to a school counselor or someone you can trust who is not her parent, she is going through a horribly hard time and she is not handling it well...if she refuses to seek help, I would best recommend to you to stay away from her, she will get you dirty before you get her clean, and let her know that if she refuse to clean up her act and seek help, then your relationship will be non-existant..you have to look out for you, the events and relationships were make and are subjected to make a impact on our lives....best of luck...

  4. Well the sensible thing to to would be to stop all illegal drugs to start with as these can cause all sorts of side affects.I have Bi-polar yet no one else in my family has it.

  5. get her to have a blood test thats how u tell

  6. Your friend needs some help. It will take a professional to diagnose her, whether it's bi-polar or something else. Either way she needs a professional. Go online http://www.athealth.com/Consumer/directo...

Good luck, you are a good friend to her and that's something in her favor right off the bat!

  7. Hi this is one very unhappy girl, has she any coulds ask her dad or a member of the family that you could talk to, and tell them you are worried about her??

Could you go with her to the doctors as she needs profesional help but she is lucky to have a friend like you around dont try to deal with this yourself get a friend or a  family member to  support you she is lucky to have such a good friend like you take care good luck.

  8. If she was on drugs when she was hyper, then the drugs were probably the cause.  If she wasn't and it had been a while since she had taken any, then maybe.  It's a difficult diagnosis and not one you or I can make.

Has she talked to her brother about it?  He might be the smartest place to start if her parents aren't taking her seriously.  If not him, then she should talk to a counselor at school.  I imagine that might be a tough thing to convince her of doing, but it sounds like she needs support and counseling as well as an evaluation by a doctor.

Another option... Since your friend is 16, she can go to her doctor without her parents.  Suggest that she stay straight and sober while keeping a mood log.  When she sees the doc, she should bring the log, explain her symptoms, and be honest about the drugs.  She won't get in trouble, but since many with bipolar self-medicate, it's important information.  Her doc will probably run some tests to make sure she doesn't have a medical problem like thyroid disorder, and then maybe refer her to a psychiatrist for an evaluation.  I have bipolar.  If she has it, the sooner she is treated, the better her life can be.
