I'm going to get a couple Parakeets and I want to put a band (or something) on their feet so i can tell them apart. What would be the most cheapest, durable, and most common around-the-house object usable. and what would be the best way to put it on. without searing, therefore smashing, the birds trust in me.

  1. I wouldn't really recommend trying this.  The birds are likely to pick at them and potentially injure themselves.  There is also the risk of them getting the band caught on something and injuring themselves.    Closed bands worn by some birds have been on since the bird was a few days old so they don't pick at them trying to get them off and are tight enough to avoid being a risk of getting caught on something.  Even proper open bands have the risks I have describe above.   I would recommend finding another way to tell your birds apart.  A good option may be trimming a single feather on one bird that you don't trim on the other (just make sure its not a blood feather (a growing feather that still has a blood supply)

  2. The best place to ask would be the dealer you are getting them from.

But be assured, you will not have them long, before you can tell which is which, even when there is only one present.
