Question:

Bird Tat? Please help??

Ok, I would really like to get a tattoo of a bird on my left hand or wrist, but I need to find a design that I like. Any ideas? I'm looking for something like a sparrow, simple black, nothing fancy. Preferably flying. Can anyone find me a picture or design? Also, how much do you think it would cost? (I'd like it to be about about an inch)

Thanks!

  1. I am getting a sparrow tattoo too!!

Here are some ideas I am using for mine.

    Good luck.

And as for the price, it really depends where you go. But I would say if you got it just plain, nothing fancy, probably about $40-$60.

  2. If you want the tattoo to be as small as you mention (an inch), you will only be able to get very simple lines and shapes; think simple vector clip-art or a small symbol. (Like the images shown here http://static-p4.fotolia.com/jpg/00/05/6...  but with LESS detail).

If you want details, like eye(s), feathers, feet, etc. you will have to enlarge the tattoo significantly. Also, some artists would be uncomfortable doing even the most simple image that small and on a bony area. Depending on the size of your wrist, you may want to consider a different area, like your shoulder or forearm. I would not advise getting the tattoo on your hand.

The best place to get images of birds are bird books or websites. Look for both actual photographs and drawings/illustrations. The most reputable are published books (your library or bookstore) and ornithological (bird science) websites. Remember: it's always better to have more reference material for your artist than too little. For ideas of what is possible try a Google image search: http://images.google.com/

Try to stay away from purely artistic interpretations, as these are often anatomically and/or proportionally incorrect and you could end up with a funny looking image of a bird permanently on your skin.

The cost of the tattoo will vary depending on the size of the tattoo, the location on your body, the level of detail or difficulty and the skill of the artist. Bring your reference material to a few different shops in your area and discuss your idea with them. They should be able to quote you an accurate price range, if not an exact price.

  3. remember......tattoos are for life, and i promise you, one day you will regret it. i did and so do most people who get them.

  4. Any good tattoo artist will recommend that you get something bigger.  1" is not really enough room for good tat, at least anything with detail.  I've seen small tats look bad when they are done because there was too much detail in too little space.  But if you decide that's what you want, it should be pretty cheap, under $100.
