Bird eggs in a nest...mother is gone?

Question

I live in a town house and there is a deck/balcony in my backyard. i recently found a bird's nest under my deck, and there are two small spotted eggs in it. my mom told me to not go near it and not to disturb it so i dont. however we never see the mother of the nest and we feel as if it was abandoned. we did not touch it or do anything to it. the nest is well made, and it looks like the mother is very organized and has well thought out about her babies.

so far we saw the eggs two times and the mother was not by it. ( it can only see the nest through a crack, since the nest is UNDER our deck )

all i wish is that the mother will not abandon the eggs.

so this is my questions for you:

1. do you think the mother has abandoned the eggs?

2. do you think the mother will lay more eggs?

3. would my dog being on the deck scare it away?

4. we have flowers on our deck that we recently planted and we have to water them everyday...would that disturb the mother and spook it away?

Sometimes a bird will abandon a nest for no obvious reason when it's early in the year. Some bird species routinely abandon the their first nest of the year because the first eggs aren't likely to hatch.

This nest is not necessarily abandoned.  How long have the eggs been there..could she still be in the laying process?  Birds will not sit on a nest until ALL the eggs have been laid.  Also she could be sitting on the nest but you are missing her visits or she is quietly leaving everytime you approach and by the time you see the nest she has already taken off.  Just let the nest be and try not to hang out right near it for extended periods of time.  Only time will tell if this nest is active...you should be seeing chicks in it in about 2 weeks.  If after 3 or 3 1/2 weeks there are still eggs there..then the nest has been abandoned and the eggs are dead.
