I have a bird problem and a pool. Will the feathers or the p**p in the pool be harmful to myself or my kids?

  1. It won't be harmful but it would probably be better just to clean it out before playing in it.

  2. With a standard in ground pool that you don't skimp on the chlorine and sanitation chemicals, and you have sufficient filtering, then the system should take care of it fine. Some people don't maintain their pools properly, that is when you may run into troubles.

If you have a perpetual vacuum and you skim the water just before using, that would be even better. Look into developing a regular "shock treatment" schedule for extra protection (such as on a Thursday to prepare for an active weekend of use).

Consider trimming any overhanging tree branches to remove perches, or setting up a "catch". This could be as simple as a few large umbrellas. I knew of some folks that had overhead wires, so they needed to put in a framework that supported a shadecloth. They fixed it up to look like a cabana, with hanging candle sconces and whirlygigs. Very creative!
