Question:

Bird identification?

For the past few nights, some sort of bird has been frequenting my attic. I have yet to see it, but it has a very loud call that reminds me of a crow, but is higher pitched and faster. Every few seconds for a minte or two it will make it's noise, then I may not hear it for a few hours.

And for the record, it is definitely not a crow. I live in upstate New York about a mile away from a river, 30 miles from a lake and about 125 miles from the ocean in a suburban, wooded area.

I know it's not a lot to go on, but can anyone guess at what it is, or point me towards a website that has bird calls?

  1. Does the noise it makes sound like tapping? It could be a wood p****r.......They are common in your area and can be destructive!

  2. Are you sure it's a bird? Mice and squirrels will get into your attic and make high-pitched squeaking noises.

If you know for sure it's a bird, it could be a barn owl -- they like structured places like attics.

  3. You are right, it isn't much to go on, though I can still help you!

From the description, it could very well be Corvus Corax; the common raven. http://www.shades-of-night.com/aviary/so...

Since it is "active" at night, perhaps it is Chordeiles minor; the common nighthawk.

Please excuse the short answer, but maybe you could catch a glimpse of it one day and I could clarify what it truly is.
