Question:

Bird nest in backyard? Hurry!?

There is a Mockingbird bird nest in a tree in my backyard. Everytime I go outside one bird sits on my fence and another swoops down and tries to attack me. I am also currently training a puppy so I have to go outside. It is a bit frustrating when all my puppy wants to do is chase after the birds instead of going to the bathroom. What can I do to show the birds that we are not a threat. How can I make them more comfortable?

Please Help!

  1. I'm no bird expert, but I would guess that they are just protecting their babies. I'm not sure if there's anything that you could do to make them more comfortable except to maybe move slowly and stay as far away from the tree as possible.

You could "kill two birds with one stone" so to speak (no pun intended) by taking your puppy outside on a leash. You keep his/her attention by preventing the puppy from chasing the birds, you work on leash training and you lessen the discomfort of the birds by keeping the puppy a distance from the nest.

  2. Probably not possible.  It sounds like they are protecting a young bird.  They will see you and the dog as threats until the baby leaves the nest.  Maybe try the frontyard?

  3. use the front yard
