So, I have a bluebird project at school and have been monitoring nests for a while now. One nest was complete with 5 eggs on June 11th (if not earlier, I came back from vaca then and checked). So I know they should have hatched by now (given the 14 day incubation). I also know that sometimes they go over a few days or are a few days early. I check when I go and the last few times, I cant recall seeing the mom there or around in the trees where she would usually stay. Is it possible they were all duds and she has just left the nest once they didnt hatch?

  1. Yes, and I don't think there is such thing as a birdperson, yet!

Although you could mean Birdgirl, she knows a lot about birds!

  2. Thanks Fennec

I would not take the eggs out just yet..they could still be tending to the nest.   Give it a couple more days..then you might watch the nest continually from afar and if you see no parents going to it after about 30 minutes to an hour..then it is most likely abandoned.  Most birds will figure it out eventually if the eggs are duds and will rebuild a new nest and try again.  Do the eggs look pinkish or white?  If pink, then they are infertile.
